About Nancy Vargas, LCSW

In-Person Therapist in Denver, CO and Virtual Therapist in CO and IL

About Me

I’m a multiethnic (Latina and white), straight, currently able-bodied, straight-sized cisgender therapist who offers culturally competent and LGBTQ+ affirming therapy for teens and adults who feel disconnected from their bodies, burdened by anxiety or trauma, or stuck in patterns of self-criticism and people-pleasing.

My Personal Story

For a long time, I didn’t feel at home in my own body or in the world around me. Growing up in predominantly white spaces, I learned early that “fitting in” often meant changing how I looked, spoke, or showed up. Experiences of exclusion and judgment left me carrying fears of being seen, embarrassed, or rejected. Like many people I work with now, I coped by trying to be perfect, keeping others happy, and controlling my body through diet, exercise, and wellness culture.

It wasn’t until adulthood—and my own therapy—that I began to understand how the strategies that once helped me survive were also keeping me stuck and exhausted. Through that healing process, I learned to step off the hamster wheel of comparison and cultural expectations, and to build a more compassionate, respectful relationship with my body. I came to believe that “coming home” to your body is a deeply personal and even radical act in a world that profits from your self-doubt.

How I Can Help

Today, I bring both my professional training and lived experience into the therapy room. I help clients gently explore how trauma, culture, identity, and social experiences shape the way they see themselves. Together, we work to untangle shame, reduce anxiety, and build self-trust so you can live more fully and authentically.

Your story is your own, and I don’t assume it looks like mine. But if you’re feeling stuck in body image concerns, social anxiety, or the lingering impact of painful experiences, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Therapy with me is a space to question harmful narratives, practice self-compassion, and reconnect with what matters to you.

You deserve a relationship with your body—and your life—that feels grounded, meaningful, and free.

How we’ll work together:

What therapy with me will feel like:

I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, mindfulness, and self-compassion approaches in my practice. Our work will not be typical talk therapy; it will be active. We’ll work to create a sense of safety in your nervous system, identify ways your mind likes to hook you, and build new and flexible approaches to anxiety, depression, and trauma. If you’ve experienced trauma, and we find it impacts how you are living now, we’ll also integrate trauma processing work as part of our therapeutic journey together.

Together, we’ll create a path forward for your life based on who and what you value, allowing you to continue building a rich and meaningful life.

If you are a teen, we'll also incorporate some family therapy sessions so that your family can learn more about how to support you.

Therapy with me is collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in deep respect for your lived experience. I bring an affirming, culturally responsive lens to our work, recognizing how identity, trauma, body-based experiences, and systemic oppression shape how we relate to ourselves and the world.

Rather than trying to “fix” you or eliminate uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, we’ll focus on changing your relationship to them — so they no longer run your life. My goal is to help you reconnect with your body, honor the strategies that once helped you survive, and support you in showing up more fully in relationships, community, and daily life.

This is a warm, inclusive space where all parts of you are welcome — and where growth happens through compassion, curiosity, and meaningful action.
